Flag pole dedicated in honor of World War II veteran

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A Milwaukee-area bank is making sure a Milwaukee native and World War II vet isn't forgotten.

Norm Neitzke was known as "the Flag Man of Appleton Avenue" but lately, his post has fallen into disrepair.

For years, a plaque stood near 76th and Appleton to memorialize Neitzke, but it couldn't withstand Wisconsin winters.

Neitzke was a life-long volunteer and he often partnered with North Shore Bank -- so it seemed fitting that the bank step in to provide a new memorial.

They invited Neitzke's family and friends and rededicated the flag pole on Thursday, November 7th.

"I had a number of North Shore Bank employees contact me and say what can we do? We want to contribute to getting a plaque put back up there. They didn't know Norm. They just knew somebody had served this country and they felt very driven to see that it get put back," Carol Herrmann with North Shore Bank said.

Herrmann says Neitzke was one of the most kind-hearted men she has ever met.
