Four people being helped by Red Cross after fire at home in Glendale; no one hurt
GLENDALE -- Four people are being assisted by the American Red Cross after a fire at a home on N. Berwyn Avenue in Glendale on Sunday afternoon, December 6th.
North Shore Fire officials were called out to the scene shortly before 12:30 p.m.
Upon the arrival of the first fire company, there was heavy smoke coming from the front of the structure,
including the eaves at the roof line. The incident commander immediately requested additional resources be
dispatched for a possible working fire.
After conferring briefly with the homeowner and ensuring everyone had safely evacuated the structure, crews
began an aggressive offensive attack on the fire.
While advancing on the fire, it was noted that the fire had extended above the ceiling level and into the attic.
A truck company was quickly able to access the roof and gain access to the attic, quickly bringing the fire under control.
Four occupants, including one in a wheelchair, were safely able to evacuate the structure unharmed.
Additionally, there were no injuries to any of the emergency personnel operating at the scene.
An investigation revealed that the fire began in the kitchen as a result of cooking. The fire quickly spread to the
adjacent cabinets and ultimately into the attic.
The occupants were alerted by working smoke alarms that also activated the monitored alarm system, immediately notifying first responders while the residents were still evacuating. This early notification likely kept fire spread limited, reducing potential damage.
The damage estimate to the structure and contents is approximately $20,000.
American Red Cross officials said they were assisting the occupants following this fire.
