Free document shredding events held throughout Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Get rid of your old documents without risking financial ruin.

"I think this is going to help the community by making sure that they're aware and the education piece. This is a crime that's on the rise and it will continue to rise," says U.S. Bank Branch Manager Rudy Gutierrez.

It's National Protect Your Identity Week and U.S. Bank is getting involved in the effort by hosting free document shredding events around the Milwaukee area.

"We put it into a secure document shred bin and we'll put it into the truck and grind it up properly so that no one can get the identity off of the material that we're shredding," says Recall Operations Manager Brian Holdren.

According to the Federal Trade Commission identity theft is the fasting growing crime in the U.S., as nearly 25 million Americans fall victim to this crime each year with a financial toll near $50 billion.

That's why bank officials recommend shredding everything.

"Thieves are able to locate information just based on an account number even if they don't have your social security number. They're pretty savvy at finding out who that credit card belongs to and how to obtain that information," says Gutierrez.

Along with protecting your finances, shredding your documents also helps Mother Nature.

"The aftermarket from all of this material is recycling. So the paper is converted into toilet tissue and paper towels," says Holdren.

A simple safety measure that can have a big impact.

U.S. Bank will be hosting several more shredding events and identity theft seminars for senior citizens.
