Police shooting at Germantown school, 1 dead

One person is dead after being shot by police in Germantown Monday night, Oct. 23. It happened outside Kennedy Middle School. The Germantown School District is closed Tuesday, Oct. 24 as a result of the incident. 

According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, around 6:30 p.m. officers responded to a report of a "subject acting erratically" in the parking lot of Kennedy Middle School. 

Upon arrival of law enforcement, the subject was able to climb onto the roof of the school. Two officers pursued on foot.

The subject discharged a firearm at the officers while on the roof, and they returned fire. A third officer also discharged their firearm. The subject died on the scene. 

At the time of the incident, approximately 50–70 students were inside the school. 

The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, per agency policy.

"No other members of the public or law enforcement were injured during the incident. This is believed to be an isolated incident and there no danger to the public. All interactions with the subject occurred outside of the building," the Wisconsin Department of Justice said.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the Germantown School District said the school was put on lockdown due to "a school safety threat." Students were transported to MacArthur Elementary via school bus so parents/guardians could pick them up.

"One of the teachers of the little girls, she said there were gunshots," said seventh-grade student Kerry Horrigan. "We all run, and we hid behind the curtain on the stage. And that's when we heard the gunshots, there were probably about five."
