Firefighting crews from multiple communities have been dispatched to Karthauser & Sons Wholesale Florist in Germantown for a fire in a structure.

Firefighters battled a fire at Karthauser & Sons Wholesale Florist in Germantown on Thursday morning, Feb. 24.

Officials say a 911 call about the fire came into the Germantown Police Department around 6:45 a.m. 

Arriving officers saw the fire was contained to a detached shed where a wood-burning stove to heat boilers for the business was located. There was also a large amount of wood chips in the shed that supplied the wood burning stove.

Germantown Fire Department arrived on the scene -- and was able to contain the fire to the wood burner shed.

The initial investigation shows the fire may have started due to a wiring issue with the burner. The preliminary estimate of damage to the wood burner and building is $2 million.

One firefighter suffered a hand injury while fighting the fire.

The Germantown Fire Department was assisted by the following departments:

  • Menomonee Falls
  • Richfield
  • Slinger
  • Mequon
  • Thiensville
  • Hartford

Other assisting agencies including We Energies, the Germantown Highway Department, and Washington County Highway Department.
