MILWAUKEE -- On Wednesday, June 27th, Summerfest's opening day, you can get into the fest for free -- no ticket required! At the same time, you'll be helping the Hunger Task Force of Milwaukee feed the hungry.
Summerfest's 45th annual fest begins today, and those bringing three non-perishable food items into the gates will receive free admission Wednesday, as long as they show up between noon and 3:00 p.m.
Sherrie Tussler with the Hunger Task Force says the group hopes to collect more than 73,000 pounds of non-perishable food items during Wednesday's drive.
"Watching that line of people stream through and knowing that they're doing something to help a neighbor is a really good feeling. For me, it sort of warms you up and makes you feel like people really do care," Tussler said.
The Hunger Task Force said it was Summerfest that first helped them launch a successful food drive, and then other festivals followed suit. This year, they plan on setting the bar higher.
"We're asking people to be more generous by bringing more items of course because we're trying to combat hunger here," Tussler said.
Again -- individuals can receive free admission to opening day of Summerfest by bringing three non-perishable food donations between noon and 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
