Getting "hooked:" Officers team up with special needs kids for a day of fishing
WAUKESHA CO. (WITI) -- Police officers were in Waukesha County's Menomonee Park, but they weren't in uniform. In fact, they weren't on the clock at all. Officers from the Menomonee Falls Police Department were there to fish with kids!
It's part of the "Cops and Bobbers" program, an event put on by the non-profit organization the Cops and Kids Foundation.
Over a dozen officers teamed up with about 60 kids from Camp Pow-Wow, a summer camp for children and adults with disabilities.
“The only camp in the area that doesn't turn anyone away so we have campers with all sorts of disabilities at camp Pow-Wow,” said camp director Scott Hestekin.
It's a fun and unique opportunity not only for the kids, but for the officers as well.
“This gives us a chance to interact with people outside of our normal job. So many times when we deal with people it`s not a good situation and this gives us a chance to enjoy the moment with people in an unofficial capacity,” said Lt. Kevin Vonbank, with the Menomonee Falls Police Department.
“Cops & Bobbers” is just one of many events the Cops and Kids Foundation organizes with police departments throughout Southeastern Wisconsin.
