'Girls Who Walk Milwaukee' empowers women through walking
MILWAUKEE - For some, New Year's resolutions might include establishing better fitness habits or making new friendships. In Milwaukee, a female-friendly group does that and more with every step.
"Girls Who Walk Milwaukee" is a social group that brings together women of all ages, step by step.

"I know Chicago has a similar group, and I just thought that was such a cool way to get people together," said organizer Sam Schulte.
More than 40 women, and a few dogs, walked more than a mile together on Saturday. The group is made up of both locals and transplants.

"Sometimes it doesn’t feel very safe, walking by yourself. I think especially in the winter when there is less people around and less people outside," Schulte said. "Safety in numbers, for sure, and also just an opportunity to meet new people."
"I’ve only been here for two months, so I get to see Milwaukee a bit more," said Morgan McDonald. She came with friends and hopes the walks can help her make more. "Where else do you meet people? I’ve been trying out book clubs, and now we’re doing this."

Walking near the Oak Leaf Trail created connection and conversation.
"When people linger behind after a walk, and they are chatting, exchanging phone numbers, it’s really cool to see. There’s not a lot of opportunities to do that," said Schulte.

On a cold Saturday morning, fitness and newfound friendships provided warmth.
"Just keep walking is just the biggest goal," said Schulte.
Girls Who Walk Milwaukee is free. The next walk is scheduled for Jan. 12 at Milwaukee's Hoyt Park.
