Good Samaritans jumped into action after speeding vehicle struck van, porch; burst into flames



MILWAUKEE -- Witnesses said a speeding vehicle hit a van before it crashed into the front porch of a home near 19th and Nash on Sunday, February 12th. The vehicle then burst into flames.

"A mess. Absolutely a mess," a witness said.

The force of the collision flipped the van at 19th and Nash.

"The van was on its side," a witness said.

It was a corner home that finally stopped the vehicle.

Mike Harris and Matt Lewis said they came from a few houses over and helped several passengers from the vehicle.

"We ended up seeing somebody in the van, and that's when dude busted open the front window of the van," Harris said.

The driver of the van was knocked out.

"So I had to use a hammer and he came and brought a rock and we ended up breaking the front glass just and got him out," Lewis said.

Everyone involved in the crash was taken to the hospital. Harris and Lewis suffered minor cuts while freeing the driver of the van.

"At the end of the day I shed a little blood for my neighborhood. I have no problem with that," Lewis said.

"My neighbor, God bless him, he's pretty hurt as well," Yvonne Lasley said.

Lasley said she saw the rescue happen. She was on her way to the store when the out-of-control vehicle careened into her home.

"I want to tell the young folks, 'please stop speeding. Don't speed. It's just not good. One day you're going to take your life as well as someone else's.' It was not a good day, but thank God nobody died," Lasley said.
