Gov. Walker tweets statement following Oak Creek shooting

OAK CREEK -- Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker released a statement via Twitter following a shooting incident at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek that left seven dead Sunday, August 5th.

Gov. Walker said:

"While the situation in Oak Creek continues to develop rapidly, we are working with the FBI and local law enforcement to provide whatever assistance they need to find the perpetrators and to care for the victims of this senseless crime. I became aware of the situation late this morning and continue to received updated briefings. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, as we all struggle to comprehend the evil that begets this terrible violence. At the same time, we are filled with gratitude for our first responders, who show bravery and selflessness as they put aside their own safety to protect our neighbors and friends. Tonette and I ask everyone to join us in praying for the victims and their families, praying for the safety of our law enforcement and first responder professionals and praying for strength and healing for this entire community and our state."

Gov. Walker received a call from President Barack Obama Sunday afternoon, according to Gov. Walker's Facebook/Twitter page.

Gov. Walker said:

"Appreciated the call from the President. It is a sad day for the Sikh community, Oak Creek, Wisconsin and America. Mentioned to the President that the FBI was part of an excellent team effort of local, state & federal authorities on site."

Gov. Walker has canceled his appearance in Green Bay for Monday, August 6th, where he had planned to discuss health care related issues for National Health Center Week.
