Gov. Walker's decision on the Kenosha casino remains mystery
MADISON (AP) — Time is growing short for Republican Gov. Scott Walker to decide whether to approve a new Kenosha casino.
The Menominee Nation won federal approval for the casino in 2013, giving Walker the final say. He has until Feb. 19 to make a decision.
Complicating matters, though, is the Forest County Potawatomi. That tribe runs a casino in Milwaukee and fiercely opposes the Menominee's plans.
Walker's administration and the Potawatomi have signed a compact amendment that would require the state to ensure the tribe is reimbursed for any losses it suffers due to the Kenosha facility. The Bureau of Indian Affairs has yet to approve the deal.
Walker says he needs that agency to make a decision on the amendment before he makes his final call.
