Groups march to Senator Johnson’s office with demands after Capitol riot

Milwaukee groups marched to Senator Ron Johnson's office Sunday after the riot at the United States Capitol.

A handful of Milwaukee groups say they want President Donald Trump removed from office immediately, gathering for a rally and march through the city Sunday, Jan. 10 that ended outside Senator Ron Johnson's office. This, four days after the U.S. Capitol riot.

They came to rally outside the senator's office with a list of three demands: removing the president and all who are complicit from office, more COVID-19 relief for Americans and an end to police crimes.

The march began in a parking lot near Summerfest Sunday morning, with the group marching to the Federal Building in downtown Milwaukee, the home of Johnson's Milwaukee office.

"As a collective, you know, population, we should be concerned for the future," said Ryan Hamann, Wisconsin Freedom Road Socialist Organization.

Most of the groups in this coalition, including the Democratic Socialists of America, the Wisconsin Freedom Road Socialist Organization and others are left-leaning and wanted to rally against the alt-right storming of the Capitol.

"(Ron Johnson) is one of the senators in Congress who have repeatedly shown their allegiance to Donald Trump and these types -- the types of people who stormed the Capitol," said Hamann.

Senator Johnson, in the hours after Wednesday's attack, condemned the violence. One of the presidents' most ardent supporters, he blamed it on Democrats' unwillingness to accept President Trump as legitimate.

"It's lawlessness," said Johnson. "I think the vast majority of people that came here to support President Trump are doing what President Trump supporters do. They respect law enforcement. They're doing it peacefully."

In the meantime, Wisconsin's congressional delegation has reacted to impeachment plans, with Representative Bryan Steil calling on President-elect Biden to condemn what he called "reckless" efforts to impeach the president. Representative Gwen Moore, however, said it's time for action and accountability in her calls for impeachment.

"He needs to face justice because what he's done is very clearly a criminal act, not just against the government or anything, but against the people more so than anything," said Hamann.
