He drove to Racine to meet a 15-year-old boy, but instead, he was met by law enforcement officials
RACINE (WITI) -- He thought he was talking to a 15-year-old boy -- but it was actually a Racine County Sheriff's investigator! When he went to meet the boy on Sunday, August 10th, the 31-year-old man was met by law enforcement officials.
It was a meeting arranged on a website you've probably visited yourself, and it proves you don't always know who you're talking to on the internet.
Racine County Sheriff's investigators say 31-year-old Andrew Stuttgen posted a sexually explicit ad on Craigslist in the "Casual Encounters" section -- seeking a male under the age of 21.
"My investigator presented himself as a 15-year-old boy from Racine. Their conversation started out like any other conversation would and after a while it turned sexual," Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said.
Sheriff Schmaling says Stuttgen agreed to drive from Madison to Racine County to meet the 15-year-old boy for a sexual encounter.
"Knocked on the door, and he was greeted by half a dozen criminal investigators. Up until that point, he fully expected that when the door opened, he was going to be meeting a 15-year-old boy," Sheriff Schmaling said.
Stuttgen is now charged with attempted second degree sexual assault of a child, using a computer to facilitate a sex crime and three counts of possessing child porn.
Sheriff Schmaling says Stuttgen is one of half a dozen people arrested since January in Racine County for allegedly coming into the area to have sexual contact with a child.
"History has taught us that many of them travel outside their respective communities -- to communities they`re not as well known in," Sheriff Schmaling said.
The investigator who had been corresponding with Stuttgen occupies a newly-created position in Racine County focusing on internet crimes against children.
His job is to lure predators.
"He is online, having conversations. He has many, many suspects that he is working on as we speak," Sheriff Schmaling said.
Sheriff Schmaling says Racine County is getting a new, more efficient computer station that will be able to quickly scan cell phones and hard drives for child porn.
