MILWAUKEE -- July 2015 marks five years since heavy rains flooded thousands of homes in Milwaukee. One of the hardest hit areas was the 30th Street corridor.
On Tuesday evening, June 16th, the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District met with about 40 homeowners in the 30th Street corridor.
In 2010, more than 3,000 homeowners had water in their basements, and many didn't have insurance to cover the $30 million in damage.
MMSD officials hope to install three new storm basins that would hold up to 40 million gallons of water, but that would require about 18 acres of land, which is at a premium in the heart of Milwaukee.
That's why they're trying to get input from those who live in the area.
"We don't want to take jobs away. We don't want to relocate people if we can at all help it. So that's what takes time. Getting collaboration, having meetings like this one, getting info from the stakeholders," Jerome Flogel, MMSD senior project manager said.
The current drainage system is built for a 10-year event.
The storm basins would be able to handle a 100-year event.
The goal is to begin construction in Summer 2016.
