"Helping other people:" Breast Cancer survivors prepare for the Pinktacular Fashion Show

FOX POINT -- Shuffling through the racks of clothes at Molloy's, Diane Gehl and her mother Judy Gehl were searching for the perfect dress.

"I`ve been looking for some nice outfits and I`m excited to wear something that I would normally never wear," said Diane as she laughed.

It was March 2014 when Diane heard those dreaded words, "you have breast cancer."

"I look at cancer as a job. You get the diagnosis and you do what they tell you," said Diane.

After undergoing multiple surgeries, Diane is now cancer free. It was her story of survival that prompted the Breast Cancer Show House to ask Diane to be a model in the Pinktacular.

"It makes them stronger and they realize how fortunate they are and that they`re helping other people," said Judy.

The highlight of the event is a fashion show featuring 11 survivors of breast cancer or prostate cancer walking the runway and sharing their experience while raising critical dollars for research.

"All of the money that we raise goes to the Medical College of Wisconsin and thus far we have donated over $5.5 million," said Judy.

Beside each of these survivors will walk a support person who was there throughout their treatment and recovery. Diane chose her mother.

"She helped me the most and was there for everything -- every surgery, drove me everywhere," said Diane.

"She's going to be gorgeous-- so I`m just there for her," said Judy.

The Pinktacular Fashion Show and Luncheon is Tuesday, October 6th at the Italian Community Center with doors opening at 10:30 a.m.
