Racine house fire injures resident, burns face

RACINE (WITI) -- A house fire created a hectic scene Sunday morning, July 6th, but firefighters say it could have been tragic. Circumstances saved one family, and spared another, along with their home.

One thing about fire, it will burn until something stops it, otherwise it keeps going until there is nothing left.

The Racine fire started in an upstairs bedroom around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 6th.

"It had vented itself out a window and had gotten into the attic and it made for some work for the firefighters that came this morning," said Lieutenant Craig Ford, Racine Fire.

Three people were inside, and luckily, three people made it out.

"The adults in the home heard the smoke alarm going off on the second floor, that smoke alarm is probably responsible for saving three lives here: two women and a child," said Ford.

Friends and family say the two women and child living there, moved in four days ago. One of the adults was injured.

"She had burned her hand I guess, part of her hair was singed off, and part of her face was a little bit burnt, but not bad," said Terry Dallia, friend of the victim.

As bad as the fire was, a fire wall prevented it from spreading to the other side of the duplex, where four other people live.

"There's a fire wall that runs from the basement floor all the way through the roof decking upstairs," said Ford.

These two, still have a place to stay and ow it to their homes design. Their neighbors are still alive, and owe it to a working smoke alarm.

Racine Fire Investigators are still figuring out how the fire started. The Red Cross is helping the displaced family, but there's no official word on their current condition.
