"Horrific wreck" near 84th and Wilbur draws shocked onlookers; two dead, two in custody
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Two people were killed and four others were injured in a crash that drew many onlookers Sunday, February 22nd near 84th and Wilbur. Many at the scene said they couldn't believe what they were seeing as investigators descended on what police called a "horrific wreck."
Police say it appears a vehicle ran a light in the area and hit two other cars. Some individuals in the striking vehicle then fled the scene, police say.
"It appears that one of the vehicles ran through the intersection, hitting the other two cars. We've got our Accident Reconstruction Unit here. They are experts at this type of thing. They're going to help make that determination along with the investigators. They are taking witness statements and they'll be able to put it all together. We have two suspects in custody. We're seeking between two and four more suspects," MPD Lt. William Beauchene said.
It happened shortly before 3:00 p.m.
We're told an off-duty detective just happened to be driving in the area. That detective was flagged down by several witnesses. The detective pursued those who fled the scene -- eventually taking two teenagers into custody.
Police continue to look for at least two others.
It is unclear at this time which vehicle the two deceased victims were in at the time of the crash. It appears one of those victims was ejected.
We're told the teens in custody are all under the age of 16.
Carol Zolinski, who lives near the scene says she was shocked by what she was seeing Sunday.
"Wow, wow -- crazy! It's not like it's a busy street. It's not like it's a fast-paced street. Two people are dead. That's sad. We've never had that over here - ever. The front ends of the two cars -- you can't even see it," Zolinski said.
Police haven't yet released the identities of those killed in this crash.
