House Republicans unveil new proposals to repeal, replace Pres. Obama's health care law

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- House Republicans are unveiling new proposals to repeal and replace President Barack Obama's health care law.

The plan released Wednesday, June 22nd is part of Speaker Paul Ryan's so-called Better Way agenda meant to show how the GOP would govern with a Republican in the White House.

"A real plan in black and white right here. We are officially putting it on the table. The way I see it, if we don't like the direction our country is going, and we don't, then we have an obligation, a duty to offer an alternative. It is our duty to offer a better way and that's what this is," Ryan said.

It relies on individual tax credits to allow people to buy coverage from private insurers, and includes other largely familiar GOP ideas such as medical liability reform and expanding access to health savings accounts.

But the 37-page white paper falls short of a full-scale replacement proposal for "Obamacare" and leaves key questions unanswered.

Republicans say it's meant as an overall roadmap and that specific legislative details would be answered as bills are written next year.
