A fatal crash on I-94 westbound near Moorland Road caused significant backups all the way to the Zoo Interchange.

A fatal crash on I-94 westbound near Moorland Road caused significant backups all the way to the Zoo Interchange.

Officials confirmed one person, a 93-year-old woman, died in the crash.

The initial accident happened around 4:15 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30.

Traffic was down to one lane, and then it was fully closed. By 5:15 p.m., one lane was back open.

However, to ease traffic, the Milwaukee County sheriff closed the I-94 westbound lanes at the Zoo Interchange.

By 7 p.m., authorities still had several lanes blocked. The scene began to clear around 7:30 p.m.

Initial accident

According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee was driving westbound on I-94, when an unknown vehicle struck it.

The Jeep lost control, crossed all lanes of traffic and struck the concrete barrier on the right shoulder.

All three people in the vehicle were injured and taken to the hospital, where one person later died from their injuries. She has been identified as 93-year-old Mary Phillips of Colgate, Wis.

70-year-old Deborah Goutis and 57-year-old Elizabeth Phillips, also of Colgate, Wis., were identified as the other two injured in the crash. WisDOT said they have non-life-threatening injuries.
