"I feel honored:" 95-year-old Delafield woman recognized for preserving a piece of history
WAUKESHA COUNTY (WITI) -- A Delafield woman spent decades to get a Civil War soldier the credit he deserved. On Tuesday, May 5th, 95-year-old Margaret Zerwekh reaped the rewards of her hard work. She pushed and succeeded to get Lt. Alonzo Cushing the Medal of Honor.

Lt. Cushing was a Delafield native. He fought and died during the Battle of Gettysburg.
In November 2014, President Obama posthumously awarded Lt. Cushing the Medal of Honor -- and it was thanks to Zerwekh's persistence.
On Tuesday, U.S. Representative Ron Kind presented Zerwekh with a plaque commemorating her years of work. She was humble about her contribution to history.

"It was just something to do. It was just another job. That's all," said Zerwekh.
But don't think after so many years, Zerwekh doesn't appreciate the gratitude.
"I'm glad this happened! Thank you for coming," said Zerwekh. "I feel honored."
According to Delafield's mayor, the actual Medal of Honor awarded to Cushing is being shipped from West Point Museum to Delafield where it will be displayed at St. John's Northwestern Military Academy until Memorial Day.
