IDENTIFIED: 80-year-old woman killed in single-vehicle crash near care center in Mount Pleasant
MOUNT PLEASANT (WITI) -- Mount Pleasant police have identified an 80-year-old Racine woman killed in a crash in Mount Pleasant Tuesday evening, January 27th. It happened just after 6:00 p.m. near the entrance to the Ridgewood Care Center on Wood Road. The crash involved one vehicle.
The driver killed in this crash has been identified as Audrey Galati. She was found unresponsive in her vehicle following the crash. She was removed from her vehicle and taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
A witness following behind Galati told police she entered the intersection of Durand Avenue and Wood Road when the southbound traffic light was red. That action nearly caused a crash in the intersection. The witness told police it was obvious Galati was suffering some sort of medical condition because she was slumped over the steering wheel.
The witness told police Galati struck a street sign on Wood Road, and her vehicle then accelerated, colliding with a chain-link fence -- coming to rest on top of a snow bank approximately one-tenth of a mile to the south from Durand Avenue -- near the entrance to the Ridgewood Care Center.
An investigation determined this crash was the result of Galati suffering a medical condition.
No one else was injured.
