"I'm happy that she doesn't have to suffer anymore:" Family, friends celebrate the life of Sierra Guyton
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- "Save our children." It was a common theme at the funeral of 10-year-old Sierra Guyton held on Tuesday, July 22nd. It was held at Tabernacle Community Baptist Church in Milwaukee.
Guyton was shot in the head while playing on a playground near 28th and Clarke — feet from her home, back in May. She passed away on July 13th.
On Tuesday, Guyton's casket was surrounded by flowers and pink balloons. Family and friends gathered to celebrate a young life taken way too soon.
"I'm going to miss my daughter until the end of time, but at the same time I'm happy. I'm happy that she has all this love. I'm happy that she doesn't have to suffer anymore," said Onjuan Guyton, Sierra's father.
Family members and friends find it hard to deal with their grief. But they say they are channeling their emotions into something positive.
"Everybody came to show their support. So I'm hoping it will draw some attention to the community where everybody will lend a hand and keep the kids safe," said Lael Bivins, whose daughter was shot a week before Sierra.
"The playground is not a danger zone. We got to allow them to get back on the playground," said Onjuan Guyton.
Many wore shirts with Sierra's picture on the front. It's their simple way to keep the little girl close to their hearts. They hope the suspects in this case are soon brought to justice.
Those suspects, 18-year-old Sylvester Lewis and 28-year-old Jamey Johnson are still in jail.
Lewis faces one count of first degree reckless injury, one count of first degree recklessly endangering safety and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.
Jackson faces one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.
The District Attorney's Office is still deciding whether their charges should be amended now that Sierra Guyton has died.
Any new charges need to be filed before these men have their next court date in August.
