Inflation report shows prices ticked up in January

By the numbers:

When asked how shoppers are changing their habits to save money at the grocery store, the most common answer was buying more generic brands (44%).

Other common responses were to make a list and stick to it (38%), pay more attention to prices in general (29%), being more mindful of food waste and reusing as much as possible (27%) and using coupons more frequently (26%). 

Other answers included opting out of buying favorite "splurges," shopping at different stores with lower prices or going to the store less often.

Prices are continuing to rise for Americans. Inflation accelerated in January as the cost of groceries, gasoline and rents rose.

By the numbers

The consumer price index increased 3% in January from a year ago, Wednesday’s report from the Labor Department showed, up from 2.9% the previous month.

These numbers show inflation is remaining above the Fed’s 2% target.
