Intersection in downtown Milwaukee closes as cars slip and slide
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- On Thursday afternoon, February 7th as the snow fell in southeastern Wisconsin, the intersection of Jefferson and Lyon was closed down for a time, after cars struggled to get up and down the hill in the slippery conditions.
Harry Vega has lived near the intersection for 22 years, and says whenever it snows, the same thing happens. That's why he decided to move his car off the street.
"As soon as I moved it, within 30-40 seconds he came down the hill and plowed into that car. If I would have been there, he would have plowed into both of us," Vega said.
Cars trying to go down the hill on Lyon Street between Jefferson and Broadway in Milwaukee struggled on Thursday.
Milwaukee police closed the block after a truck was struck by another car around 4:00 Thursday afternoon.
"Cars have ended up on the sidewalk over here. It's just really bad. It's nobody's fault. It's just an icy street," Vega said.
The road was cleared and eventually reopened.
A few blocks away, sidewalks were being cleared at the Municipal Building where Milwaukee's Department of Public Works snow plan was in effect.
"We started with about 96 trucks. We added about 16 trucks on to just help us through the evening rush hour," Wanda Booker said.
