Involved in a crash? You can now access your crash report online!

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Individuals involved in vehicle crashes on Wisconsin roads now have the convenience of getting copies of their crash reports online. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) now offers crash reports online at the official Wisconsin DMV website: www.wisconsindmv.gov or the Crash Reports webpage:  https://app.wi.gov/crashreports.

The Crash Reports application enables customers to request and purchase crash reports on a computer or smart phone.

Getting an electronic copy of reports will require one of three incident details: The date of the crash and driver license number of one of the parties involved; the WisDOT document form number; or the WisDOT accident number. Each report can be printed or saved in a PDF format. The cost of each report is $6. Payment can be made online via electronic checking (ACH) or credit/debit card. Up to 50 reports can be purchased per transaction.

Crash reports may take up to two weeks from the date of the crash to be received from law enforcement and recorded into the WisDOT database. If the crash record is not found, then WisDOT probably has not received the crash report from law enforcement.

If a crash occurred more than 90 days prior to requesting a report, then requests for the crash report can be made by emailing DMV at traffic-accidents.dmv@dot.wi.gov. Include the crash information received through this application and the name and mailing address of the person requesting the report. An invoice for $6 per crash report will be mailed to the customer with the copy of the report(s).

DMV may receive up to 1,000 requests for crash reports in a week. This new online service is one more way WisDOT continues its strategic goal of greater transparency, better customer service and ultimately, safer Wisconsin roads.

“We know that there are a lot of details to address in the weeks after a crash. We’re glad to offer WisDOT customers this convenient new online service,” said Darlene Schwartz, DMV supervisor.

When accessing transportation-related forms, note that only the website with the extension .gov is the official state website. Others with .org and .com are not official and may have extra charges for forms or list information that is dated or incorrect. While these unofficial sites are not illegal and may have disclaimers, WisDOT cannot guarantee their accuracy or control their added fees.
