OAK CREEK -- Sources say the Swedish home decor and furnishing store IKEA may be coming to Oak Creek. If no comments from city officials, a closed-door meeting on Tuesday night, and an announcement scheduled for Thursday are any indication -- there's truth to the speculation.
The nearest IKEA super store is located in Schaumburg, Illinois. Those who have been there said the extra time and distance it took to get there was well worth it.
The excitement is growing with word that IKEA is looking to purchase and develop a 30-acre site just west of I-94 and north of Drexel Ave. in Oak Creek. Right now, the land is owned by Northwestern Mutual.
On the agenda at Tuesday night's Oak Creek Common Council meeting is a closed-door meeting on development. The mayor of Oak Creek told FOX6 News he could not talk about it. The community development director wasn't taking calls either.
"I think it's very good to see business relocating here, to the state of Wisconsin -- creating jobs, driving economic growth and it really shows the potential Wisconsin can have," said Manny Perez who has shopped at IKEA.
If an IKEA is built in Oak Creek, it would be the first IKEA in Wisconsin -- although there have been rumors of IKEA building on various sites in the past. One source tells FOX6 News, this is close to being a done deal.
Again, Oak Creek officials plan to make an announcement of some kind on Thursday, May 5th at 10:30 a.m.
