MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Two people from the same family were killed in an early morning shooting in Milwaukee on Friday, May 1st -- and the man who did the shooting is on the run. Friday night, loved ones came together to remember the lives of those who were lost.
Unimaginable grief filled the corner near 37th and Nash during the candlelight vigil for the two victims Friday evening. Family and friends joined hands and prayed for peace in a spot that was the place of something so violent.
"It didn't have to happen like that," said Tony Coleman.
Police say a large group of people crowded the streets around 1 a.m. Friday. Witnesses say there was an argument -- and more than a dozen shots were fired into the crowd.
"A fight ensued, involved roughly 30 or 40 people. A suspect produced a gun, fired multiple shots," said Warren Allen from the Milwaukee Police Department.
Two men were killed. Relatives identified them as 26-year-old Montrell Burdine and his 25-year-old nephew, Damario D. Jones .
On this night, family and friends are overcome with emotion -- comforted by a community and prayer. Dealing with two loved ones lost, trying to understand why, and begging for the violence to end.
In addition to the two men killed, there were three others wounded by the gunfire.
Again, police say they have identified the suspected wanted in connection with this shooting. But that person has not been arrested.
