"It shook up the peacefulness:" Four-year-old shot as suspect(s) open fire in south side neighborhood

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Bullets broke up a cookout on Milwaukee's south side on Saturday night, June 14th. Two people were shot -- including a four-year-old boy.

It happened near 15th and Becher just after 9:30 p.m.

"The guy to my left and right got hit. Me, I didn`t get touched. I don` t know how. It messed up my head last night," Deangelo Barron said.

Barron says he and some friends were in a yard in the 2100 block of S. 15th Street barbecuing when suspects rolled up and opened fire.

"All of a sudden you heard a car stop and heard 'lau, lau, lau, lau, lau, lau.' I saw like, six big flashes. You hear people scream 'oh my God, my baby, my baby.' It was just crazy," Barron said.

The gunshots echoed through the neighborhood.

"I actually was upstairs listening to music in headphones. It was that loud that I heard three of the gunshots in my room upstairs. It was six shots. They just pulled up and drove off right away. There was one black car that sped off and that's it," Edgardo Nieves said.

A four-year-old boy and a 21-year-old man were struck by the gunfire and injured.

"Chepe, he got hit in this foot. The little kid next to me got hit too," Barron said.

"That's just messed up," Nieves said.

Barron says he's concerned about the victims and in disbelief that the gun violence occurred where he lives.

"It feels like it just shook up the peacefulness around here. You have to second guess everybody who comes around here now. You have to really be out here to protect your kids and it shouldn`t have to be that way," Barron said.

This shooting comes weeks after Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett held a Ceasefire Sabbath event at a church around the corner.

"The only way it`s going to stop is if people just stop being ignorant," Nieves said.

Barron, Nieves and other neighbors just hope the suspect(s) are caught.

"I'm hoping that when they find him, the person rots under the jail," Barron said.

Both victims in this shooting incident are being treated at the hospital. They are expected to survive.

No one is in custody.
