"It was a difficult morning:" Snowy roads make for messy commute in Kenosha County

KENOSHA COUNTY (WITI) -- The significant snowfall seen on Tuesday morning, March 3rd had people scrambling in Kenosha County.

Officials say the Kenosha County Department of Public Works had its full complement of more than 40 snow plows out Tuesday morning. But it was a challenge to keep up with the snow that was falling.

Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth says the snow had his deputies dealing with dangerous situations on a rather slick I-94.

"It was a difficult morning. We had 18 cars be assisted in ditches.  We had four accidents -- four accidents with just damage. We had four accidents that included injuries. And we had one hit-and-run. And we had, we shut down the interstate for a while," said Sheriff Beth.

The shut down took place near Highway 142 -- when two SUVs and a tractor trailer were involved in a crash. Some 40 gallons of diesel fuel was spilled as a result of this wreck. One lane remained closed for several hours until the cleanup was complete.

The mess on the roads was a true test of patience for people like Kyle Fennema, who traveled from Milwaukee's North Shore to his job at Mars Cheese Castle.

"I was probably one of the last dozen vehicles to get off of the highway until it backed up past there. It was just semis, all the way across the road, right to left. Vans, trucks, everything, nobody was movin'," said Fennema.
