"It was scary:" Driver arrested after slamming vehicle into building, ending pursuit
MILWAUKEE -- One person was taken into custody early Tuesday morning, June 2nd after a crash on Milwaukee's north side. Folks who live in a building near Teutonia and Nash are extremely grateful no one was hurt. This, after a vehicle slammed into the side of it -- busting through the bricks.
It happened around 4:00 a.m. Tuesday.
Police were following the vehicle when the crash happened. The driver initially fled the scene on foot, but officers found him and took him into custody.
"It was kind of scary. I'm glad I'm safe," Carolyn Bovia said.
Bovia lives on the second floor of the building the vehicle crashed into. The building was severely damaged.
The incident began with a pursuit initiated by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office and an outside agency and ended near Teutonia and Nash on Milwaukee's north side.
"I was concerned about if the building was sound and safe," Bovia said.
Bovia says the building's owner, A.J. Wilson, alerted residents that the structure is safe, but there is significant damage.
"Just beat up and busted -- some water pipes loose in the basement," Wilson said.
Thankfully, no one was hurt.
The front of the building was being renovated and turned into a daycare, and the tenant was there often.
"The lady who`s opening the daycare down here, she's here about twice a week building the place, getting it together. It is a setback," Bovia said.
The tenant working on the daycare says she will most likely have to look at other options when it comes to a location.
As they pick up the pieces, those who live in the building say they're very grateful no one was hurt, and that the person responsible for what happened is in custody.
Witnesses at the scene tell FOX6 News they heard the suspect was driving a stolen vehicle.
FOX6 News is waiting to hear from Sheriff's officials as to what led to the pursuit.
