"It's a great way to recognize the victims;" Hundreds run in remembrance of Sikh Temple shooting

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- It's an effort to turn a somber anniversary into a mission of peace as hundreds gather for the second annual Chardhi Kala 6K in Oak Creek.

The event serves as a remembrance of the six lives lost in the Sikh Temple shooting. Organizers are also hoping to change lives.

"People are inspired. When you look at their faces and talk to them, they have a hope that they will be better citizens of the community," said Rahul Dubey.

Dubey created the Chardhi Kala in response to one of the darkest times in his life. His godfather was one of the men killed in the tragedy.

Close to 300 runners circled the route back onto the Oak Creek High School football field. They were greeted with banners and support from across the country.

"I hope it continues for years and years. It's a great way to recognize the victims," said Nikki Cahen, the first participant to cross the finish line.

All money raised during the event goes toward a Sikh memorial fund and six scholarships for high school students -- one scholarship in remembrance for each worshiper killed in the shooting.

"That day was horrible. We remember every detail of it. We want to do whatever we can to support the Oak Creek community coming together," said resident Kerri Engebrecht.

The Chardhi Kala has attracted participants and speakers from around the world. Organizers say the event has grown since starting last year.
