"It's a lifesaver:" Hunger Task Force distributes hundreds of 'Holiday Bins'

MILWAUKEE -- On the outside, they are just a collection of cardboard boxes, piled by the hundreds. But the contents mean so much more.

“It’s a lifesaver," said Bennie Allen, pastor at the Greater Little Hill Church of God in Christ.

At the Hunger Task Force’s South Warehouse, cars and trucks from the organization's network of 56 pantries lined up to collect 800 "Holiday Bins" of food.

 “They have taken a tremendous weight off the shoulders of the church," Allen added. "By helping us to be able to serve the community much better.”

The Hunger Task Force serves its network of shelters and pantries throughout the entire year. But, being the holidays, they wanted to separate things a little bit with this round of donations. So if you look inside one of the boxes, there are Christmas cookies, candy canes, a ham and everything else you’d need for a special holiday meal.

“Imagine visiting a food pantry and getting tuna or peanut butter at the holiday," said Hunger Task Force Director Sherrie Tussler. "So what you really want to do is have that ham, sit down and eat with your family.”

If the snow on the ground didn't give it away, it is indeed the offseason for the Milwaukee Brewers. But the team’s marketing department was one of a number of groups helping load the vehicles on Friday morning.

“It’s kind of our department holiday outing," said Jeff Harding, Director of Creative Design and Strategy for the Brewers. "In the past we’ve done things like wine and paint or brewery tours. But this year we decided we’d kind of give back to the community and do something to help other people.”

A network of volunteers, making sure families in need still have something to celebrate this holiday season.
