'It’s been a very busy day:' Burlington residents dig out from 8+ inches of snow
BURLINGTON -- The City of Burlington was transformed overnight into a winter wonderland. This, after a storm dropped more than 8 inches of snow in parts of Racine, Kenosha and Walworth counties.
“Honestly, I only thought we were getting 1 to 3 inches," said resident Cayla Dziadosz during a break from shoveling. “Then I woke up to two phone calls saying, ‘hey, your school district is closed today.’ I’m like, ‘what are they talking about?’ I went outside and I’m like, ‘oh, that’s what they were talking about.'"
Burlington received a lot of everything -- rain, thunder and even hail Monday night that then switched into more than 8 inches of snow by Tuesday morning.
“It’s not bad on top, but underneath is all that rain from (Monday)," John Maltby said of the heavy, wet snow on his driveway. "It must have been 7:00-7:30 (Monday) night, we had hail that was just hammering down. The rest of the bottom of this is like a sponge.”
Schools were closed for the day, and the wet snow meant tough sledding, if you will, for people like Maltby.
“I’m doing alright," he said while catching his breath. "I’ve had two heart transplants, so I’m kind of sneaking around but, that’s OK. I like doing it, but you just gotta be careful.”
The dumping also meant a boon for plow companies trying to cash in on the biggest snowfall of the season in this area.
“It’s been a very busy day," said one plow driver, Wade Hendricks. "I’m hoping it keeps on snowing.”
“We’re in love with it," Dziadosz said of her young son. "We love tubing and skiing and sledding and all that stuff, so we’re glad that it’s back.”
