'It's heartbreaking:' Gov. Walker tours storm damage in Fond du Lac County where 8 tornadoes hit

FOND DU LAC COUNTY -- Gov. Scott Walker's latest stop on his tour of storm damage in Wisconsin was Fond du Lac County and Dodge County Thursday, Aug. 30. He asked that all residents report property damage by calling 211.

The National Weather Service said there were 16 tornadoes statewide on Tuesday, Aug. 28; 11 of them in southeast Wisconsin.

Gehring said the weather service is still surveying damage and the confirmed number of tornadoes will likely increase.

Meanwhile, state emergency officials say 20 counties have been affected by flooding over the last 10 days. In Dane County, the flood damage has been estimated at more than $100 million.

Walker on Wednesday declared a statewide emergency, directing state agencies and the Wisconsin National Guard to assist local authorities as needed.

"Allows us to free up resources from various state agencies to work with county and municipal entities. It's heartbreaking to see the damage over the last week. Number one issue is safety. Two is the cleanup. Third is a part of that assessing the damage," said Gov. Walker.

In a statement, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, U.S. Rep. Ron Kind and U.S. Rep Glenn Grothman on Thursday called on President Trump to "put the full support of the federal government behind cleanup and recovery efforts in Wisconsin," sending a letter to the president "writing to request federal assistance for the Wisconsin communities impacted by recent storms and flooding, which particularly impacted the southwestern and northcentral counties of La Crosse, Vernon, Monroe, Crawford, Juneau, St. Croix, and Adams."

Senator Baldwin and Representatives Kind and Grothman requested additional assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for damage assessments, road and bridge repair assistance from the Department of Transportation (DOT), and farm and crop damage assistance from the Department of Agriculture (USDA).

"The more we can collect information, the more likely we have a chance at that. It's a high bar," said Walker.

Cleanup efforts continued Thursday in Brownsville in Dodge County.

"Stuff was hitting my roof, hitting my house, hitting my windows. Tree parts...everything from the trees was just flying through the air. There was so much damage," said Jo Ann Gouinn.

There's more rain in the forecast -- with a flash flood watch already issued for five counties beginning Friday, Aug. 31.

Meanwhile, Gov. Walker said he'll be visiting Sauk County Friday.
