"It's important to stand together:" Milwaukee pauses to honor victims of Orlando mass shooting

MILWAUKEE -- The lives lost in Orlando, Florida were remembered in Milwaukee during a vigil Monday evening, June 13th at City Hall.

Forty-nine people were killed when a gunman on Sunday opened fire at the popular Pulse nightclub.

The bell at City Hall rang more than a dozen times during the vigil -- each chime signifying another mass shooting that has happened in the United States, the most recent of which happened Sunday in Orlando.

"I just had to cry. I heard it in the car Sunday, driving down. It was such a shock," a vigil attendee said.

Across the country, hundreds have gathered in solidarity with those in Orlando -- to pray for the victims' families.

"You feel like you're so powerless and at least this gives you something that you can put your arms -- at least you`re here together and thinking about what happened," a vigil attendee said.

Songs were sung and flags -- both American and rainbow -- donated by Eder Flag of Oak Creek to the city of Milwaukee for this vigil were held high.

"It is important to us to stand together with the LGBT community, with the Latino community, with the American public who will always stand up to hatred and extremism. That is why we are here. We must work together. There are those that try to divide us. They try to pit us against each other we cannot allow that to happen we are better than that," Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said.
