It's tasty and nutritious, and it's WANTED! Hunger Task Force kicks off "Wanted: Peanut Butter" program
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Peanut butter is tasty and nutritious, and now -- it's wanted!
"This is breakfast. This is lunch. This is supper. This is something that you can just open the jar and eat right out of the jar," Hunger Task Force Executive Director Sherrie Tussler said.
The Hunger Task Force is kicking off it's Wanted: Peanut Butter program. It began three years ago when the cost of peanut butter skyrocketed, and the Hunger Task Force couldn't afford it.
"A full truckload of it was valued at more than $60,000. We could've gotten as much as two semi-loads of chicken for the same amount," Tussler said.
Walgreens and area fire departments jumped on board to help the cause. You can now buy and donate peanut butter at more than 100 participating Walgreens stores.
More than 60 fire stations in the Greater Milwaukee area are serving as drop-off locations.
Starting this year, you can even bring peanut butter to the airport!
"If you're taking a flight and you've packed peanut butter in your bag and you don't want it to get confiscated before you go through TSA you can throw it in at the airport," Greenfield Fire Chief Jon Cohn said.
Each year, Walgreens and the fire departments have had a friendly competition. Although Walgreens has always had the upper hand, this year the fire departments got a head start as a donation was made during the news conference as the program kicked off.
"The firefighters take an early lead!" Cohn said as his firefighters dropped off peanut butter.
The Wanted: Peanut Butter program runs through March 9th.
