JCC pool reopened after precautionary crypto shut down

WHITEFISH BAY (WITI) -- The Jewish Community Center in Whitefish Bay proactively closed its pool when the crypto outbreak began -- but Friday, October 11th it was back open for business.

Executive Director Mark Shapiro welcomed members back to the Harry and Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Aquatic Center after being closed for the past 10 days.

"Our members have supported our decision we made with keeping the idea of public health of the community at the forefront," said Shapiro.

The pool was never identified as a source of crypto, but there have been a total of 19 confirmed cases in the area. Shapiro says a couple of members were stricken.

As a precaution the pools were shut down, super-shocked and drained -- ensuring the center minimized any chance of the bacteria spreading.

"We threw out all of our pool noodles and kick boards. We regularly bring in new equipment every year so we figured we'd do everything in our power to make sure we end any chance of this spreading throughout North Shore," said Shapiro.

Signs are posted reminding members to practice goo personal hygiene as the bacteria is believed to be passed from person to person.

"We're paying more attention to our members, upholding the policies we've always had in place," said Shapiro. "Asking people to recognize their responsibility in public health and we're just going to keep being diligent about it."

Due to the decrease in new cases, health officials said Friday that they have stopped stool testing. The investigation into the original contaminated water source is still ongoing.
