Milwaukee Kwanzaa ceremony at Wisconsin Black Historical Society
MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Black Historical Society held its 37th annual Kwanzaa ceremony on Thursday.
Each night of Kwanzaa is dedicated to observing one of seven principles. On the first day, the Wisconsin Black Historical Society highlighted the principle of Umoja or "unity." Umoja calls for people to "strive for and to maintain unity in the family and community."

Kwanzaa's other principles include self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. The tradition is to light a candle each day for seven days, meant to highlight the principle of each day.
Thursday's event was free and open to the public.
