Kwik Trip rewards program restored, 'cybersecurity incident' to blame

Kwik Trip said its rewards program has been fully restored Monday, Oct. 23 – weeks after a "cybersecurity incident" caused a system outage.

The outage began Oct. 9. The incident disrupted the company's internal network systems, Kwik Trip said – adding there was no indication customers' card information was involved.

"Cyberattacks are not sparing small companies or larger companies, and our data is leaking everywhere on the dark web," said Alex Holden, chief information security officer at Holden Security.

Customers can use a Kwik Rewards card to earn discounts and enter sweepstakes each time they buy. Members can now access rewards in-store and through the Kwik Rewards mobile app and website to view and manage their rewards account, the company said.

Statement from Kwik Trip:

We understand over the last two weeks you may not have been able to redeem or accumulate rewards, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and frustration this may have caused. We are committed to making this right with you and have outlined how we’re going to do that below:

Your Rewards:
Over the last 24 hours, our teams have worked diligently to ensure any cards that had been swiped during the outage received the proper credits for those purchases. The rewards associated with those purchases have been updated on your account as of today and are available for you to use.

Double Visits:
Through November 5th, members will be receiving double visits for every purchase in-store or at the pump. Visit earning is limited to one visit plus one bonus visit every 30 mins.

Missed Rewards:
We understand there were several instances where you may not have been able to swipe your Kwik Rewards card or your Kwik Rewards card was not accepted during the outage. To account for this, we will be awarding all members bonus visits based on their average weekly visits prior to the outage. These visits will be applied to your account within 24 hours of this communication along with additional bonus visits as a thank you for your patience. Once applied to your account, you will receive a push message and email notification if opted in for these communications. If you are not opted in for these communications, you can verify the bonus points through your visit balance in the app or on KwikRewards.com.
