Letters of support pour into Oak Creek in wake of Sikh Temple shooting
OAK CREEK -- The city of Oak Creek has been experiencing an outpouring of support since the Sikh Temple shooting.
Not even two weeks after the shooting, hundreds of letters have arrived at City Hall addressed to the mayor. The letters offer sympathy and support from around the world.
One from the ambassador to Mexico reads "It is with great consternation and sadness that I followed the aftermath of the heinous shooting at a Sikh Temple in Oak Creek."
The city is still reeling from the brutal killing of a half-dozen Sikh Temple worshippers. Some of the letters now hanging on a board in city hall come from members of the Sikh faith.
One reads, "Being a Sikh in an American community, I want to thank the city mayor and the police department."
One letter came from the president, ordering that the flag at the White House be flown at half-staff.
Artists sent their our paintings of the tragedy, while kids sent hand-drawn pictures of flowers and clouds.
"They're coming from ambassadors in Mexico. We've had the consulate from Canada. We've had local residents. We've had surrounding states," said City Administrator Gerald Peterson.
The city plans to leave the letters up in City Hall for several months. The Oak Creek Fire Department has also received hundreds of messages since the shooting.
