Madison police: No major issues on State Street Saturday night, hoping for another party Monday!
MADISON (WITI) -- Wisconsin Badgers fans celebrated on State Street in Madison Saturday night, April 4th -- after the team's victory over previously undefeated Kentucky. After the final buzzer, it was madness in Madison as Badgers fans spilled out onto State Street.
"It's amazing! It's like a dream come true," said one Badgers fan.
"We finally beat Kentucky!" said another.
"I'm so excited! I love the Badgers," another fan said.
It's been a long time coming...
"I expect them to win. I believe in them. They're amazing," said Josh Sendelbach.
Madison police say there were no significant issues Saturday night -- issuing this statement:
"The Madison Police Department is pleased to join with Badger Nation in celebrating a hard fought and gratifying victory over the University of Kentucky Wildcats in the NCAA men's basketball semi-final. Moments after a UW victory was assured, jubilant crowds flooded the State Street area and were shoulder-to-shoulder from Lake Street to Gilman. We do not have an estimate of crowd numbers.
We are especially pleased to report that there were no significant incidents. There was only one report of accidental minor injuries to a reveler early in the evening. That victim was treated at the scene.
There were no arrests and no reports of property damage.
The department anticipates a similar event on Monday evening as the Badgers are headed for a National Championship matchup with the Blue Devils of Duke University. Plans are in place for crowd management for that event. Officers from Madison will be assisted, as they were this evening, from the Dane County Sheriff's Office and University of Wisconsin Police. A traffic plan will also be in place Monday. Motorists should plan ahead for traffic congestion Monday following the game. John Nolen Drive is the preferred route for traversing the Isthmus."
Wisconsin will play Duke on Monday, April 6th in the NCAA Tournament's championship game. Badgers fans are hoping for another party on State Street Monday night following what they hope is a big Badgers victory. Duke is 34-4 on the season and is a #1 seed. The #1 seed Badgers are 36-3. The teams face off Monday evening at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
