Man runs from Waukesha County court; plea entered, sentence handed down

WAUKESHA, Wis. - A man arrested after the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department said he ran from the courtroom (video below) during an April 2024 hearing agreed to a plea deal.

What we know:
The accused, Deonta Woods, was in court on Thursday, Jan. 23 to enter pleas to two of six charges against him. Online court records indicate Woods pleaded no contest to a charge of escape-criminal arrest – and guilty to felony bail jumping. Four other charges, including resisting or obstructing an officer, were dismissed and read into the court record.

After the pleas were entered, a Waukesha County judge sentenced Woods to 13 months in prison plus an additional two years of extended supervision.
The backstory:
According to a criminal complaint, Woods was in court in April 2024 for a drug case and a judge ordered $20,000 cash bail. Woods then ran out of the courtroom.
Multiple deputies told Woods to stop running, the complaint states, but he kept going and eventually ran out of the building and jumped over a fence.

Security video captured his run out of the room, through the courthouse and outside, across the parking lot, with deputies not far behind.
Man runs from Waukesha court appearance
A man was arrested after the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department said he ran from the courtroom during a hearing on Thursday, April 4.
Woods was found less than a mile away from the courthouse and ran when a deputy spotted him, the complaint states. A deputy repeatedly ordered Woods to stop, but he kept running. Eventually, the deputy used a taser and took Woods into custody. He was then taken to a hospital for medical clearance and jailed.
