Marquette officials say two students sexually assaulted in Italy
MILWAUKEE -- Marquette University officials confirm that two students were sexually assaulted while studying in Cagli, Italy.
Marquette officials say the sexual assaults occurred within the past two weeks.
The students were reportedly at a bar with friends who are not associated with Marquette University when they were attacked.
The students have been offered counseling and reimbursement for travel expenses should they wish to return early from the program, but so far, they have opted to stay.
In a letter to parents, Marquette officials said, in part: "We have offered support, counseling and any additional resources needed to the students affected, and have taken steps to address the safety and well-being of all the students in the program. We have also re-emphasized with students the importance of practicing personal security measures, including always walking in pairs, and being aware of their surroundings."
Marquette officials have forbidden students from returning to the establishment where the alleged attacks occurred, and are working with Italian police, who are investigating.
