Marquette's Sigma Phi Delta fraternity placed on probation through May 2016
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Marquette University has announced it has placed its Sigma Phi Delta fraternity on probation effective until May of 2016.
The Sigma Phi Delta fraternity was in the news this past spring -- as it was one of three Marquette fraternities to receive an "official warning" due to allegations of misconduct and hazing that allegedly took place at fraternity houses associated with the chapters. The Triangle Fraternity and the Delta Chi Fraternity are the other fraternities issued official warnings by the university.
An official warning means that should any additional violations of Greek policies, Marquette University’s Student Code of Conduct or the specific fraternity chapters’ risk management policies take place, immediate action will be taken to suspend all activities pending the conclusion of an investigation.
Marquette University's Senior Director of University Communications says the decision to now place the Sigma Phi Delta fraternity on probation through May of 2016 was a decision that came after the fraternity took part in a conduct hearing this summer.
Marquette's Director of University Communications says the Sigma Phi Delta fraternity has been placed on probation "as they were found responsible for hazing."
The Director of University Communications says: "While on probation, Sigma Phi Delta needs to take many steps including undergoing membership review, a three-year improvement plan and review of its new member education process."
Marquette University has issued this statement to FOX6 News:
"This summer, Sigma Phi Delta went through the university’s student conduct process for hazing allegations and was found responsible for hazing and is suspended in abeyance and placed on probation until May 15th, 2016. Sigma Phi Delta must satisfactorily complete outcomes as determined by the Office of Student Development. The outcomes were designed to help the chapter grow in a positive direction through membership review, a three-year development plan and new member education and development. We expect all of our students to uphold Marquette’s Catholic and Jesuit values and to contribute to a safe and respectful environment, and we take any allegation of misconduct extremely seriously."
