Marquez-Luna sentenced to 15 years in prison in son's death
MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee County judge sentenced Francisco Marquez-Luna to 15 years in prison and another ten years of extended supervision Friday, April 27th. This, after Marquez-Luna took a plea deal to avoid going to trial for his son's death.
Ten-month-old Derek Marquez died from blunt force trauma to the head during an incident on Memorial Day weekend in 2011.
At first, Marquez-Luna told investigators he had tossed the child in the air to stop him from crying -- and he hit his head on a coffee table. Later, the story changed.
The criminal complaint against Marquez-Luna said, "what he did was throw a Wii controller at him and hit him in the head."
Marquez-Luna faced up to 60 years in prison.
