Massive letters could welcome drivers to airport in 2013

MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee County Board committee is considering a plan to add an iconic feature to Mitchell International Airport. It would be viewable from the eastbound lanes of the airport spur.

The proposal would place three massive letters with Milwaukee's airport designation, MKE, in the median of the spur. Its expected cost of $350,000 right now budgets for the signs, lighting and landscaping. The project would also need to consider safety concerns on the spur.

Right now, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is in the midst of a massive reconstruction of the airport spur. The new feature would be installed in 2013 along with the completion of the project -- if it is okayed by the county board.
