Mayor Barrett: Emergency curfew for teens in Milwaukee has ended
MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett issued a proclamation on Monday, August 22nd which ends an emergency curfew in the entire City of Milwaukee for all persons under 18 years of age between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
The curfew was put in place in the wake of the officer-involved fatal shooting of Sylville Smith and because of the unrest in the Sherman Park neighborhood that followed.
The proclamation issued Monday says the following:
"It is no longer necessary and expedient for the health, welfare and good order of the City of Milwaukee that the restrictions of curfew be continued..."
It also says:
"All citizens are free to return to their normal, lawful activities."
To be clear, the city ordinance says the summer months curfew for teens is from 11:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. every day. But from September 1st through May 31st, essentially during the school year, the curfew is 10:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
