Mechanical problem sparks car hauler fire on I-41/94 near Mount Pleasant; 6 cars destroyed

RACINE COUNTY -- A fire involving a car hauler closed all northbound lanes of I-41/94 at Kraut Road near Mount Pleasant in Racine County on Tuesday afternoon, June 19. The scene was finally cleared just after 5 p.m., after the fire around 2:15 p.m.

Officials with the Racine County Sheriff's Office said multiple 911 calls came in reporting the fire on the hauler carrying nine vehicles -- parked on the right shoulder, with four vehicles fully engulfed in fire.

All three northbound lanes were shut down, and when fire personnel arrived, southbound traffic was blocked as well while the fire was extinguished.

An initial investigation has revealed there was a mechanical problem involving one of the vehicles on the trailer, and a fire started in the engine compartment, which quickly spread to a total of six vehicles, which were destroyed by fire.

A damage estimate hasn't been released.

No one was hurt.
