Traffic light project faces road blocks

A Mequon traffic light aimed at helping slow down traffic and enhance safety has been put on hold.

A Mequon traffic light aimed at helping slow down traffic and enhance safety has been put on hold.

At a busy intersection between Mequon Road and Weston Drive, people in Mequon like David Wolfson are used to seeing speeding drivers in this busy part of town.

"People go 10 miles an hour and faster, so that's kind of ridiculous, right?" Wolfson said. "Slow, cars, down. Make it safer for people to walk around."

To help, the traffic lights are installed and ready to go. However, Mequon Mayor Andrew Nerbun said the city has faced some road blocks.

"Frustrating for the public to see these intersections there but not be able to be turned on," Nerbun said. "One thing we learned at last month's meeting with DOT is that we are not alone. This contract issue has been going on for so long. Approximately 20 projects statewide are now on hold because of not being able to do the railroad and signal coordination with WSOR."

WSOR is a nickname for the Wisconsin and Southern Railroad. The mayor said for now, it is not clear who or what is causing this delay.

Nerbun said he has been pushing for the project to get finished with the community's safety in mind.

"I just hope that it gets done quickly, so our citizens can see that there is progress," Nerbun said.

FOX6 News reached out to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for comment on this story, but did not hear back.

Late on Friday, Jan. 10, Mayor Nerbun said as a trial, they requested to have a flashing yellow for Mequon Road – and a flashing red for Weston. However, WisDOT has denied the request.
