Metal detector & more: New security checkpoint installed at Racine Co. Courthouse

RACINE (WITI) -- People looking for a parking spot outside the Racine Courthouse Tuesday morning, July 29th were in for a surprise. College Avenue, a popular spot to park, was practically empty. That's because the courthouse entrance on that street is now closed.

It's all part of the new safety precautions inside the building. Only the front door is now open to the public. That’s so everyone has to go through the new security check point -- complete with a metal detector and x-ray machine for belongings.

It could take some getting used to, as far as what people can and cannot wear and what they are now prohibited to bring in. Some of those items include firearms, razors, glass objects, bottle openers, scissors, and nail clippers.

Some people will also have a longer walk to the doors, or a longer wait once they’re in. But those are sacrifices people who frequent the building say are worth it for the added promise of safety.

“I’m here almost every day of the week and often in family court, there's a lot of contentious cases so I’m very glad there's security,” said Theresa Villar.

“I’m okay with it. If it increases safety, I think it’s a good idea,” said Katie Nelson.

The south entrance is now only open to employees, and is monitored to make sure it stays that way.

The new security equipment located inside at the front of the building cost $90,000. It costs an additional $100,000 to staff the two, armed deputies at the checkpoint.
